Arrow Function in React Components

I just finished up a screenshare on a React Lab and I thought it would be good to clarify two points about the arrow function’s scope in React.

Debugging the Javascript Experience

I’m going to keep this post relatively short to keep myself from unravelling into a rant about my frustrations with the Javascript curriculum. In short, I thought the second half of this section’s materials did an incredibly poor job of preparing us to fulfill the requirements of the JS project. According to our cohort lead, the next edition of the curriculum will be completely overhauling this section, so hopefully most of the issues I had will be resolved at that point.

Project the Third: Railing about Rails

Thinking back on this most recent cylce, I don’t think there was a week where I truly felt on pace with the curriculum until I reached project week. Much of Ruby on Rails already felt very familiar thanks to our time with Sinatra, and the sheer volume material introduced in this section slowed my daily progress to a crawl. With some mid-summer travelling and wedding planning thrown on top, I’m surprised to be writing this post a day earlier than the deadline.

Ramping Up

Having just completed the second portfolio project, I’m doing some rethinking in terms of my approach to the curriculum going forward. The pace was notched up significantly once we hit ORM/Sinatra, and by the beginning of this project cycle I was more than a little worried about the workload that I had let pile up. Thankfully, building with Sinatra turned out to be a much smoother process than I was expecting, so I was able to get myself back on track. Looking ahead though to the next several months, I’m definitely going to place much more emphasis on pushing through material early in the week so that I can schedule out additional time as needed later on.

Project 1: Scoping Out with CLI

Today is the day: I’m finally writing my first Flatiron Blog Post (cue balloons)!
